The Ceramic Art of Bruce Thomas
30,000
years ago, our stone age ancestors discovered how to bake clay figurines
in bonfires. Soon, they were making pots and plates and cups,
along with objects of art. I suspect they had as much fun
then as we do today.
Working in clay is a passion Bruce picked up late in
life, having been stuck in the virtual art world of computer graphics
for far too long. He has since made up for lost time with a vengeance:
taking classes at San Diego City College under Yoonchung
'YC' Kim, and receiving individual instruction from Mercy
Neumark and Kouta Shimazaki.
Bruce
is a true cross-disciplinarian. Having earned his bachelors degree
in mathematics, computers, and with a minor in art, he seeks to fuse
the various disciplines and humanistic yearnings into his ceramic
creations. A bit of a mad scientist, he prefers to mix his own
glazes, watching with apt anticipation as they come out of the
kiln. Sometimes it's disappointing, but often it's wondrous.
Peruse his gallery (Vessels,
Sculpture, and the Erotic),
and if you are so inclined, fire off a note to Bruce about
what you think of his work. Better yet, if you'd like to have him make something for you, then by all means, let him
know.
You can email Bruce at 'hotmarscube at gmail dot
com'. Currently, Bruce is in
the process of making a wood-fired pizza oven. You can watch his
progress here.
