So here was the idea. I had been reading up on
wood-fired ovens. I blame Mercy, for she's the one who first put
the bug in my ear. I WAS going to do a barrel smoke kiln, but the
more I talked it over with her, the more I realized I really wanted
something that I could cook in, and would be fun to make. Then
suddenly, as I researched it on the internet, and read some books, I was
hooked. I just HAD to make one.
Now, traditionally, people build an outdoor wood-fired
pizza oven using fire bricks or red bricks and mortar it all together,
either in a dome style, or a half-cylinder (Here's
a good example). But I also read of people making the oven
straight from clay. They would make a big dome with sand, then
cover that with a thick layer of wet clay. Once it was dry they
would scoop out the sand and then slowly fire the clay with ever-larger
wood fires (Here's
a example). Now, one can also buy a pizza oven kit, for about two
grand + shipping (Here).
But I had access to a kiln... so I could form my clay
oven, and then fire it to cone 06. What a cool idea!
So off I went.
Now sit back and step
through the slide show of my pizza oven project.
