And sure enough, it just
barely fit in the kiln. The depth was exactly 28 inches, just the
maximum the kiln would take.
Once again, we lifted it one piece at
a time, then resembled the three pieces as we put it in the kiln.
It needed to be fired all together, so that any warping would be
minimal.
This was a bisque firing, to cone 06
(about 1800 F°). Most ceramic pieces are bisque fired first, this
is to strengthen and dry the piece. They are then dipped in a
glaze, and fired again at a much higher temperature. Called a
glaze firing, they range from 2150 F° (cone 6 - called low fire), and
2350 F° (cone 10 - high fire).
For the pizza oven, I only needed the
bisque firing. It won't be glazed.
